5 Rules for Displaying a Flag at Your Business

Nesper crews install a flag & flag pole in Marion, Iowa

Just 9 years before Nesper Sign was founded in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, then-President Woodrow Wilson issued a May 30, 1916, presidential proclamation, establishing a national Flag Day on June 14th. Of course, many American’s will celebrate this Flag Day 2020 by displaying the Red, White, and Blue at their home or place of business.

“…Great and service couldn’t of been faster.”

At Nesper, we are proud to have always been locally owned and operated. If you stop by our office, you’ll be able to see our flags on display, all 100% USA-made, right here on American soil. We carry US Flags, State of Iowa, and POW flags, in stock and ready to hang. In addition, we stock two types of 20’ residential flagpoles.

Packaged and ready for delivery, pick-up, or installation.

During a sporting event, before the start of the school day, and
sometimes just in quiet passing, every day is a great day to fly the American flag, but sometimes business owners are not aware there are special rules for flying the flag.

5 Rules for Displaying your Flag

  1. Fly Your Flag at Night: It should be illuminated, but against what you may have heard, you can fly flags at night. You may need to remove the flag during inclement weather, unless it’s all-weather (meaning it’s made of nylon or another absorbing material).
  2. You Can Display A Flag From Your Car: When displaying a flag from a vehicle, a flag should be flown from a staff and not draped. The staff should also be affixed to the car’s ride side.
  3. Display Your Flag In A Window: You may place your flag vertical or horizontally, but always with the Union (the stars representing the states) on the viewer’s upper left.
  4. Use A Flagpole: Our service staff is experienced in making sure your flagpole is operating its’ best. If flown in a group of flags with state, local or group flags, the U.S. flag should always be the highest, and should be raised first and lowered last. If flown with the flag of another nation, the flags should never be flown on the same pole, and the flags should be of even height, with the U.S. always to it’s own right (the viewer’s left).
  5. Every Day Is A Good Day to Fly the Flag: The flag can be displayed every day, but here’s some other days of particular importance to show the flag our dignity and respect.
    1. New Years Day (January 1st)
    2. Inauguration Day (January 20th)
    3. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday (the 3rd Monday in January)
    4. Lincoln’s Birthday (February 12th)
    5. Washington’s Birthday (3rd Monday in Februrary)
    6. Armed Forces Day (3rd Saturday in May)
    7. Memorial Day – Half Staff until Noon (Last Monday in May)
    8. Flag Day (June 14th)
    9. Independence Day (July 4th)
